What Happens After You Apply? A Step-by-Step Guide to the Locumotion Hiring Process
If you're considering a GP career in Ireland, one of the biggest questions is often:
"What happens after I submit my CV?"
For many doctors, applying for a role abroad can feel overwhelming. There may be questions about registration requirements, interviews, relocation, and whether you'll have support throughout the process.
At Locumotion, we've designed a straightforward, doctor-led recruitment process that helps guide you from your initial application through to your first day in practice. As Ireland's longest-standing and only doctor-led medical recruitment service, our goal is to ensure doctors feel informed, supported, and confident at every stage.
Step 1: Submit Your CV
The journey begins by submitting an up-to-date CV through Locumotion's registration process.
At this stage, the recruitment team reviews your qualifications, experience, and eligibility to practise medicine in Ireland. If you're an international doctor, the team can also advise on the regulatory requirements that may apply to your situation.
The aim isn't simply to fill vacancies—it's to understand your background and identify opportunities that align with your career goals.
Step 2: Speak with an Experienced Recruitment Team
Once your application is received, a member of the Locumotion team will contact you to discuss your experience and your suitability for working in Ireland. The team assesses both clinical qualifications and the practical considerations involved in relocating or changing roles.
This is also your opportunity to ask questions about:
- GP careers in Ireland
- Practice environments
- Work-life balance
- Locum, contracted, and permanent roles
- Relocation considerations
Step 3: Meet with an Irish GP Recruiter
One aspect that makes Locumotion different is that candidates are interviewed by experienced GP doctors who understand the realities of working in Irish primary care.
The interview is typically conducted by video call and lasts approximately 30–45 minutes. During the conversation, the recruiter wants to understand:
- Your clinical experience
- Career aspirations
- Preferred working style
- Lifestyle priorities
- Long-term goals
This isn't designed to be a stressful examination. Instead, it's an opportunity to have an honest conversation with somebody who has worked within the Irish healthcare system and can provide practical insights into what to expect.
Step 4: Understanding Registration and Regulatory Requirements
Following the interview, the team will advise you on the regulatory and legal requirements needed to work in Ireland and support you through that process. This may include guidance on accreditation, registration, and other requirements relevant to your circumstances.
For many international doctors, having an experienced team available to answer questions and explain next steps can make the process significantly less daunting.
Step 5: References and Job Matching
Before an offer can be made, Locumotion will request two written references, ideally including one from a recent employer.
At the same time, the recruitment team works to match your skills, preferences, and career objectives with suitable opportunities across their network of practices and healthcare providers. Locumotion works with more than 400 GP family practices, out-of-hours services, and urgent care clinics across Ireland.
Rather than applying blindly to multiple practices, doctors benefit from a more tailored matching process based on their individual goals.
Step 6: Accepting Your New Role
Once you've found the right opportunity and accepted your new role, the Locumotion team helps ensure that all required paperwork is completed and provides support throughout the transition process.
For doctors relocating to Ireland, this stage often includes guidance on the practical aspects of the move and support designed to make the transition as smooth as possible.
Step 7: Onboarding and Starting Your New Career
Before starting work, doctors attend a Clinical and Administrative Onboarding Programme at the Locumotion Head Office in Dublin. During this programme, recruits are introduced to the wider team and have the opportunity to meet other doctors who are beginning their own career journeys in Ireland.
The onboarding process provides an opportunity to:
- Meet the recruitment and support teams
- Learn about administrative systems and processes
- Build connections with fellow doctors
- Ask any remaining questions
- Prepare confidently for your first day in practice
The objective is simple: help you feel prepared and supported before you start your new role.
