There are several steps required to register as a GP in Ireland. While there may seem to be many things to organise, we are here to support you throughout that process and to make it as seamless as possible.

The steps required to register as a GP in Ireland are broadly as follows:

  • Irish Medical Council registration
    • Depending on when and where you qualified, you will be advised if you must complete examinations as part of your registration.
  • Medical Indemnity
    • All GP Doctors working in Ireland require Medical Indemnity Insurance.
  • Work Visa
    • If you are not resident in the EEA, you will need a work visa.
      • The Atypical Working Scheme (AWS) permits you to work in Ireland for up to a maximum of 90 days consecutively.
      • The Critical Skills Employment Permit (CSP) is a 2-year permit suitable for contract or permanent relocations. Thereafter you will be eligible for a Stamp 4 visa provided you have a contract of employment. When you have been legally resident in Ireland for 5 years, you can apply for residency. Spouses and family members can join their partners on a CSP. A dependent of a Critical Skills Employment Permit Holder is permitted to work in Ireland while they are resident here and accompanying the Critical Skills Permit Holder. To take up employment in Ireland they must have a job offer and then apply for a Dependent/Partner/Spouse Employment Permit.
      • The ICGP Non-EU Rural GP Programme aims to identify, support and integrate a cohort of non-EU GPs into the rural Irish GP workforce. Successful completion of the programme will make a doctor eligible for the IMC Specialist Register.
  • Personal Public Service (PPS) Number
    • A PPS number is the unique identifier that enables you to access public services. It is required by employers to accurately calculate taxation on your income.
    • Without it, emergency tax at a much higher rate is charged.
  • Irish Bank Account
    • You will need a bank account for payment purposes.
