GP & Family Doctors - Ireland
In order to be eligible to work as a GP in Ireland, you will need to register with the Irish Medical Council (IMC). The IMC is the governing body who evaluate and register doctors to practice medicine in Ireland - www.medicalcouncil.ie.
How to go about registering with the IMC
Specialist Division - Vocationally Trained GP
Registration Categories
There are four main categories for registration with the IMC as a GP. Please choose one of the following categories that apply to you:
Category A – If you are a graduate of a Higher Specialist Training Programmes in Ireland, the appropriate registration form can be downloaded here and should be submitted directly to the IMC with all the required supporting documentation.
Categories B, C and D – If you are a graduate of Higher Specialist Training Programme and/or recognised as a Specialist in an EU Member State, the appropriate registration form can be downloaded here and should be submitted directly to the IMC with all the required supporting documentation.
Category E – If you are a Medical Practitioner who has completed their higher specialist training or equivalent but are not recognised under Categories A - D above, the appropriate registration form can be downloaded here and should be submitted directly to the IMC with all the required supporting documentation.
General Registration – Non-Vocationally Trained GP
There are four main categories for applicants for GP registration. Please choose one of the following categories that apply to you:
Category 1: Graduates of Irish medical schools
Category 2: EU citizens who graduated in an EU medical school and/or their qualifications are recognised under EU Directive 2005/36/EC (recognition of professional qualifications for EU citizens)
Category 3: Non-EU citizens who graduated in an EU medical school and/or their qualifications would be recognised under EU Directive 2005/36/EC (recognition of professional qualifications) if they were an EU citizen
Category 4: Medical practitioners who have completed recognised internship training hold full registration and do not meet the criteria for any of the above categories
To apply for registration with the IMC for the first time please visit www.medicalcouncil.ie/registration/firsttime.asp and follow the links at the bottom of the page by answering each question as your eligibility for registration may vary depending on your individual circumstances.
How long does it take?
The application process with the IMC can take from between 8 and 12 weeks to complete
Fees
The registration year runs from the 1st of July to the 30th of June each year. The registration fee will differ depending upon the type of registration and stage in the year when you register – full details of the registration fees are available here.
